ClimateTech company Low Carbon Materials (LCM) has announced today that its flagship product, OSTO®, is available for purchase.
OSTO® is a carbon-negative lightweight aggregate that can be incorporated into a variety of concrete applications to lower its carbon emissions.
The innovative ‘drop-in’ product is available now to purchase via Specialist Aggregates.
What is OSTO®?
OSTO® is a carbon-negative lightweight aggregate with broad application potential, including use in concrete mixes, screeds and resin-bound applications.
This high-performing aggregate can be used as a ‘like for like’ replacement for traditional lightweight aggregates.
Technical information can be supplied on request.
Why is OSTO carbon negative?
OSTO® diverts materials that currently can't be recycled away from incineration, preventing these emissions from being produced. OSTO® captures CO2 from the atmosphere, permanently storing it in the aggregate.
By reducing the reliance on traditional carbon-intensive lightweight aggregates, OSTO® enables construction firms to replace carbon-intensive materials in their value chain.
Why is OSTO® important?
Materials used in the construction of buildings represent around 9% of total global energy-related CO2 emissions (GlobalABC, 2022).
Decarbonising carbon-intensive materials is a huge challenge for the construction sector but is vital, especially with impending net-zero regulations on the horizon.
OSTO® can be used as a 'drop-in' solution to replace traditional lightweight aggregates and, therefore, greatly reduce the carbon footprint of projects in which it is used.
What can OSTO® be used for?
OSTO® is a carbon-negative lightweight aggregate with broad application potential, including use in concrete mixes, screeds and resin-bound applications.
Customers should confirm that the product's properties are suitable for their specific application prior to contract commencement.
Depending on performance and carbon targets, a notional replacement of OSTO® within bound construction materials is likely to be in the order of 3 to 15%. However, a testing ladder substituting OSTO® for aggregate is recommended to ensure that optimum design is achieved.
